Koutsuji  Temple
Koutsuji  is  a  Shingon  sect  temple  opened  by  En  no  Gyouja  (an  ascetic)  at  the  time  of  Emperor  Tenchi  (662~671).
Its  neighborhood  is  famous  for  Shugendo  and  it's  been  told  that  Kōbõ-Daishi  (Kūkai)  practiced  asceticism  here  at
the  age  of  28  in  801.  On  August  18th  every  year,  a  festival  called  Juuhachiyama  eshiki,  which  is  a  rare  festival  in
the  country  that  women  are  forbidden  to  take  part,  is  carried  out  all  through  the  night  and  many  followers  gather.
In  the  early  morning  on  the  19th,  it  is  open  to  women  as  well  and  female  followers  waiting  at  the  Nyonindou
(Women's  chamber)  outside  of  the  gate  are  welcomed  to  join.
