Yamao House
Looking west from the Gakusaka Torii gate at the Kotu trailhead in Inoue, there is a tiled house with a gate in front and white walls. This is the Yamao family, who served as mountain magistrates in the Edo period. The current house was built about 100 years ago in the Shoin style, with two entrances: the front entrance was used for high-ranking guests, and the entrance on the north side was used for daily access. This is the first time I have ever seen such a thing. The gate of the Yamao family is the only relic of Tokushima Castle, since it was destroyed by fire in an air raid in July 1945.
The Yamao family, whose family name was originally Akamatsu, lived in Hanaki Village, Hachisuka Township, Kaito County, Boshu (Aichi Prefecture), and initially served the Oda family. Since then, he served as a mountain magistrate until the beginning of the Meiji era. Therefore, there is a large collection of old documents, such as the "Ancestor's History" and three volumes of "Records of Forest Use," which can be said to be one of the town's treasures of cultural assets.
