Handmade washi production techniques
The history of washi paper in Tokushima Prefecture is long, and it is said that long ago, Amanojishu-no-mikoto made washi paper in Kawada. In the Nara period (710-794), there is a record that washi was presented to the Imperial Court. In 1890, Kawada's paper was exhibited at the World Exposition held in Paris.
In an effort to preserve this handmade technique, Yamakawa Town designated it as a folk material in August 1969, and the prefecture subsequently designated it as an intangible cultural asset in June 1970.
The Awa Washi Traditional Industry Hall is a facility where visitors can experience, observe, and recreate the production process of the techniques and skills cultivated over a long history.
