Sezume-ku Ariji Reclamation Memorial
A monument made of tuff, about 2 meters and 50 centimeters high, stands on the east side of the intersection with the old road on the way from Setume to Aoki.
In the village of Sezume (present-day Sezume district), bamboo groves were planted along the Yoshino River and the former Kawada River with the help of villagers in order to reduce damage from floods and protect the banks. In 1889, the village was merged with Yamazaki to form Yamase Village, and the people of Sesume decided to form a ward council to manage and operate the bamboo grove as a ward-owned forest, and in 1891, the council was called the Oaza Sesume Ward Council, with 12 members elected by the residents of Oaza Sesume.
The area along the old Kawada River was constructed from 1907 to 1926 at a total cost of 12 million yen, making the bamboo grove to protect the embankment from east of Yutate to Hotarubashi unnecessary. Therefore, the bamboo grove was reclaimed and turned into farmland (mulberry fields because sericulture was flourishing at that time). This monument was erected in March 1934 to commemorate this event.
Later, due to the food shortage caused by the World War II, the mulberry fields were knocked down and cultivated as paddy fields and potato fields, and now a national highway runs through the area, and the roadside has been turned into a residential area.
Looking up at this old stone monument on the roadside, I can feel the tearful efforts of our predecessors.
