Oe-gun Forestation Memorial
In the Meiji 30's (1897-1906), a proposal was submitted to the county council to start tree-planting in order to create the county's basic property.
In the 36th year of Meiji (1903), this forestation plan was started, and Mt. Cotton (present-day Mt. Takakoshi) was chosen as the forestation site.
The plan was completed by planting about 600,000 cedars and other trees in the 10 years from 1903. The total area was about 100 hectares.
The governor of Maue County at the time was Yutaka Sogawa, who was later succeeded by Shozaburo Miyagi, who completed the project.
In February 1914, this monument was erected to commemorate the completion of the forestation project.
The monument, made of granite, is about 2.1 meters high and 1.5 meters wide.
The inscription on the back of the monument is written by Shozaburo Miyagi, the mayor of Maue County at that time, and includes the names of two county chiefs, Sogawa and Miyagi, six county clerks, and 51 county council members.
