Kawamata Waterway Opening Monument
In the 27th year of Meiji (1894), the drought damage was so severe that it was almost impossible to harvest any crops.
In response to this situation, there were people who stood up to realize the dream of establishing a water supply system, which had been called for since as far back as the Tempou era (1830-1845).
These people included Matsumura Yusuke, Fujiwara Hatsuzaburo, and Kudo Kan'ichi, who were the initiators of the Kawamata Canal. Also mentioned is the contribution of the mayor of Kawada Village, Takegoro Sato, at the time of the opening of the canal.
The water source for the Kawamata Irrigation Project was obtained from Kawamata, in present-day Misato Village, but the peasants of the time were greatly criticized for the large amount of money involved.
These pioneers resisted the persecution, preached the value of this water, and worked hard to complete it.
Surveys were taken in 1896, construction began in June of 1896, and was completed on June 29, 1899.
More than 100 hectares of paddy fields were flooded by the completion of this water supply.
In December 1916, a monument was erected to commemorate the virtues of these pioneers.
The granite monument is inscribed with the words "Mansei Eiyori," which was written by Shogao Hachisuka.
