Kotu Shrine
In the town of Yamakawa, where the mountains are high and the water is pure, Mount Kotu, which has the appearance of a famous mountain, is also a mountain of faith. People climb the 18-mile (about 6 km) mountain road to pray for the blessings of the gods and Buddha worshipped at the summit.
At the top of the mountain is Kotu Shrine, dedicated to Ame-no-Hiwashi-no-mikoto, the deity of the shrine, and 14 other deities.
The name “Kotu Gongen" originated in the Heian period (794-1185) from the idea of mixing Shinto and Buddhist beliefs that the true nature of God is Buddha, and that Buddha appears in the form of God in order to save sentient beings.
It is said that Kotu Gongen was related to Yoshino Zao Gongen. In the 2nd year of Meiji (1969), the Shinto and Buddhist ordinances were enacted and the shrines and temples were separated. During the spring festival on March 15, a grand Kagura (Shinto music and dance) is performed, and during the summer festival on July 18, a large Shiba-tou goma is held at Kotu Temple, attracting many worshippers. On July 18, the summer festival is called "18Yama," and a large shibatō goma is held at Kotu Temple.
In the past, sumo wrestling was held in the plaza at the trailhead. Many sumo wrestlers from other towns and villages participated in the tournament, and it was a great success. It is said that Kenzan (who passed away in 1911 at the age of 58), a native of this town who rose to the rank of ozeki, organized this event.
