Kawada Hachiman Shrine
While Yamazaki Hachiman Shrine and Setsuzume Hachiman Shrine are located on the plains, Kawada Hachiman Shrine is located on a plateau at the foot of Takagoe Mountain and has 50 stone steps. Behind the shrine building, there is a thick growth of large trees, which gives the shrine an air of divinity.
Although the date of establishment of Kawada Hachiman Shrine is unknown, it has been worshipped as a guardian deity of the Imawabe clan since ancient times, and there is a record that Emperor Saga made the shrine a place of prayer. In 1189, at the order of Yoritomo, the shrine was rebuilt. There are also many building tags, including one for the construction of the main hall in November 1197.
The main shrine is a Shinmei-zukuri structure, and the arrangement of the main shrine, hineden, worship hall, and mukaehais is unusual as a dragonfly shape, which is rarely seen in this prefecture. The deities worshipped at Kawada Hachiman Shrine are Honda Betsunomikoto, Emperor Ashinakahiko, and Kichotashime-no-Mikoto, with Amaterasu-O-no-Mikoto worshipped at Shinmeisha Shrine, Amagari-no-Mikoto at Kasuga Shrine, and Atago Shrine.

The purification ceremony is performed in the middle of the festival, and a Shinto music is played, hot water is made, and it is offered before the gods to pray for the prosperity of the households of the shrine parishioners.
Since 1946, at the annual festival on October 22, at 10:00 a.m., the director of the Tokyo Jinja Main Office sends an envoy to the shrine, and the head of the Tokushima Prefectural Jinja Office presents the shibaku offering. Kawada Hachiman Shrine is the only shrine in the county with this ceremony. On the day of the festival, the head of Kawada Hachiman Shrine and volunteers will participate in the solemn service, and the parade of portable shrines will begin at 3:00 pm.
