The ruins of Aogi Castle
Between Yamase Station and Yamakawa Station on the Tokushima Main Line, the southern plateau extends down to the railroad, and the Aoki tribe is located on this plateau. On this plateau is the Aoki tribe, where the Aoki Castle of the Ichihara (Rekihara) clan was located. Aoki Castle is referred to as Sesume Castle in the "Awa Kojo Ki" and "Shiroki", and as Kirai Base in the "Awa Shi".
According to a local resident, swords and implements were found when the castle grounds were reclaimed. In March 1934, in commemoration of the 1,100th anniversary of the death of Kobo-Daishi, 88 Buddhist statues from Shikoku were enshrined around the castle ruins. There is also a small shrine in the center of the castle, dedicated to the Lord of Aoki Castle. The area where Aoki Castle was located is mountainous in the rear, with a precipitous cliff in the front, and the old Kawata River flowing just below, overlooking the entire Sezume area. It seems to have been a very suitable place to set up a castle.
