Saiho-ji Temple
The main deity is Fuzyo Bosatsu (Goddess of Mercy), a member of the Omuro sect of Shingon Buddhism.
Saihoji Temple was completely destroyed by fire during the Tensho period (1573-1591) during the invasion of Awa by Motoyoshi Nagasogabe of Tosa, and was rebuilt in its present location in 1597.
The temple was originally a branch temple of Myooin Temple in Isawa Village, Aba County (now Isawa Town, Aba County).
The main image of Fugen Bosatsu is said to have been created by Priest Eshin. In 1890, the temple was separated from Myooin and became a direct subsidiary of Kongobuji Temple in Koyasan, and in 1952, it became a part of the Omuro sect of Shingon Buddhism when it became a religious corporation.
Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed by fire at 1:00 a.m. on October 20, 1927, along with many old documents and the Benzaiten (a Buddhist altar), which is said to have been created by Kukai Shonin. The present building was rebuilt in September 1928.
In front of the main hall in the precincts of Saihoji Temple, there is a wrought-iron Amitabha statue. This seated statue is 1.1 meters high and 82 centimeters wide at the chest, and is said to have been made during the Tenpyo period (726-764) in the late Nara period.
