Seifuku-ji Temple
The main deity of the temple is Amida Nyorai, the head deity of the Honganji sect of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
Seifuku-ji Temple, also known as Muryu-zan, is said to have been established in the first year of the Gennin Era (1224). It was first built in the village of Miki, Yamada County, Sanuki (Kagawa Prefecture). Later, in 1347, the temple was moved to Ichikubo, Kawada Village, Awa Province, in order to promote Buddhism.
One of the oldest buildings in this town is the temple's inryo. The architectural style of the building, made by combining triangular pieces of wood horizontally, is in the style of the Azekura-zukuri of Nara's Shosoin.
The statue of Amida Nyorai, the main deity enshrined in the temple, is a 70 cm high wooden statue made of gold leaf. It was brought to the temple after the main hall was burned down in 1789, and the artist and the year of production are not clear.
The statue of Shinran, the founder of the temple, was given to the temple by the head temple, Kyoto Honganji, on April 5, 1858, along with the temple name.
